Darren Hayes, Australian for...
by Vicki Roan

Whatever happened to Savage Garden, the dynamic duo from down under? It appears that Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones called it quits at the end of last year, after 20 million album sales and two, count that, two number one hits in the United States. Imagine what the Moulin Rouge would sound like if it were a song. Imagine Fred and Ginger dancing to Santana. The word sultry comes to mind.

Spin Lead singer Hayes told journalists, “It’s amicable and it is a decision that has been coming for a long time.” Apparently the band’s instrumentalist, Jones, was not the glam-and-glory type of guy and decided he much rather take the back seat in the industry. So Hayes took on the role as Mr. Savage Garden with Jones’s hazy face in the backdrop. Then, after finishing up the Affirmation tour, it was ‘G’day mate’ to Jones.
But I finally found the silver lining of this dismal cloud when I turned on my stereo and heard the luscious lyrics of “Insatiable,” the newly released single off Hayes’s self-recorded album, Spin. And all I can say is, Darren baby, you don’t need a band when you sound that good.
Darren Hayes
His heavenly voice soothes the soul and can make even the bitterest of hearts croon with affection. If you don’t believe me, try it yourself. Simply put in the CD, close you eyes, and feel your body sway to the flamenco guitars and heavy bass beat in the distant. The violin ensemble complement Hayes’s sweet yet sorrowful melody as he breathes the words “Turn the lights down low/Take it off/Let me show/My love for you/Insatiable.” And repeat.
The album hit the shelves on March 19, with "Insatiable" streaming through every radio station and through every listener’s heart. It is (I believe, rightfully) described as the sexiest song since Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On.”
“This one just flowed through me. It is absolutely one of my favorite songs I have ever written,” says Darren.
The CD itself features a blend of up-beat ballads, R&B-tinted rock, and sleek (not candy, I repeat, not candy) pop. Sound familiar? Perhaps this is simply Savage Garden without the guitarist.
“A few words to describe the sound of the album? Fun. Pop with a capital P. Electronic. R&B. Funky. Sexy. Romantic. Romantic. Romantic! The first single? Perhaps not what you’d think. Maybe the best thing I’ve ever done. Imagine what the Moulin Rouge would sound like if it were a song. Imagine Fred and Ginger dancing to Santana. The word sultry comes to mind. Romantic. There’s that word again.”
In an official press release, Hayes and Jones stated, “We are extremely grateful to our fans all around the world for their incredible support over the years. The success of Savage Garden and our time together has been an amazing experience…one that we will never forget. We just hope that you all understand our individual needs to continue growing.”
While the plants in the Garden may grow no more, there remains standing one small flower: brilliant and budding. And his name is Darren.

It's not just you -I always feel like that when I read/hear good things about Darren! Thought I was the only one soppy enough to feel that way, so it's quite a relief to find I am not alone in this, lol!
